Stigma: unfavourable reactions to people when they are perceived to possess attributes that are denigrated, mental disability, skin colour, physical disability, gender, orientation etc, being multiply stigmatized ~ intersectional oppression. Ecological approach: factors accumulate across all levels, could explain why health gradient exists. Tackling health inequalities: adopting a multilayer approach, strengthening individuals, strengthening communities, encouraging macroeconomic and cultural change. Cross cultural psychology: culture is considered to be fixed, compares attitudes beliefs and values of different cultures. Cultural psychology: considers culture to be constantly changing, dynamic. Beliefs are : the cultural norms, expectations of society. Health belief systems: 2 approachs to health, traditional: Hold high positions of esteem in communities. Midwifes come from this but have credentials now. Pros and cons to credentializing of traditional practices: expert practitioner. Witch trials are an example of the attempt to get rid of traditional female healers.
