Girls seek intimacy in relationships sooner and more extensively than boys. Stresses importance of early relationships for the development of intimacy in later life. Mary ainsworth attachment styles: secure, anxious avoidant, anxious reistant. Mary main styles of adult attachment: secure/autonomous: able to discuss relationships w parents comfortable, dismissing: need to play down importance of relationships and feelings, preoccupied: associated w great deal of ambivalence or confusion, both positive and negative feeling. These represent different internal working models about relationships (bowlby) Uni students classified as dismissing more lonely and have greater difficulty w peer relationships. Preoccupied were not as unhappy as those in dismissing group.
