Unlike freud, erikson did not feel that earlier unsuccessful adaptations during life course were impossible to change. Erikson said healthy balance between positive and negative poles is most adaptive outcome for each crisis. Emphasized the idea that the self is continuous through time and the feeling of being unique from others. Dan mcadams model of identity as life story. Anchored by a sense of self defined by a life story which the individual continually updates and elaborates. Story is told, for both others and the self, as a way of making sense of the person"s past, as well as guiding the self for the future. Adolescence becomes central period for initial framing of ongoing life story. Ways in which individual is distinctive from others: outsiders perspective on person: Individual"s general behaviours and qualities as rated on traits or dispositions like agreeableness: individuals personal concerns, motives, and projects: Inner sense of self not available to outside observer.
