Document Summary

Lifespan theorists view development as a process that continues throughout the entire life cycle. 3 general sources of influence on development through life: Normative/age graded factors: experiences most people undergo at roughly same age, biological or sociological. History graded/cohort factors: unique influences of a particular period of history on the individuals who experienced that time, ex children born in 20s affected by great. Non normative: individual, unexpected events ex divorce or changes in residence. Normative factors more likely to impact early years of development when bio/social factors most strongly linked to age trends. Non normative increasingly important as people grow older and people"s experiences come to differ. History graded are relevant across lifespan but more influential in adolescence. Sharp increases in depression at adolescence, primarily for girls. Females more likely to show depression in adolescence and adulthood, but not childhood. However gender differences in depression are the same in developing countries, thus cultural factors must be involved.
