PS270 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Controllability, Information Processing, Cognitive Load
Document Summary
Automatic and controlled processing: automatic- thinking that occurs without awareness. Cognitive load: controlled processes require a lot of resources, cognitive load is influenced when given an extra task. Correspondence bias experiment: listening to speeches while memorizing a string of numbers or not. If not kept busy they rated close to 5. Other factors determining controlled responding: accountability. When you supress you"re more likely to automatically judge when you stop supressing. Character judgement exercise: tendency to see other people"s behaviour as dispositionally caused, when focusing on self, much more likely to say it depends on the situation than if talking about prof. Explanation for actor-observer effect: different motivation. The farther away the memory the more likely you are to see yourself in the memory: different information available. Actors have more consistency and distinctiveness information. Self-serving bias about their own behaviour: we will make whatever attribution serves us best, take personal credit for positive outcomes and vice versa.
