PS102 Lecture 8: MEMORY
Document Summary
Duration up to 30 seconds without sensory information. Duration -- lasts up to sec for visual. Information not transferred is lost information not transferred is lost. Information is very briefly retained in original sensory form. To get information into working (short term) memory and then into long-term memory, you need to encode it. There are two ways to encode : automatic processing: when you automatically remember something with no effect, effortful processing: when have to work to memorize something. Working memory: a short-term memory store for information you are thinking about right now, including: recalling memories such as a phone number, day dreaming, problems you are currently solving, reading. Long-term memory: all of the information we have gathered that is available for use, such as acquired skills, people we know, etc: unlimited capacity, organizing information is necessary for proper storage in long-term memoy. Organize information as you learn it: to get information into long-term memory you need to encode it.
