Several questions can help determine whether behaviour is abnormal: Is the behaviour maladaptive? (maladaptive not providing an appropriate adjument in the environment or situation) Challenging to use this for abstract ideas like happiness. Social norm deviance use norms or standards of society. Need to be fully aware of all situational variables/ cultural variables. Subjective discomfort does the individual experience emotional discomfort with their behaviour. Maladaptive behaviours prevents person from functioning (daily) ex. Neurosis: disorder causing personal distress and some impairment in functioning. Not losing contact with reality or violating important social norms. Psychosis: severe psychological disorder, sometimes requiring hospitalization impaired functioning everyday life. Typically lose conact with reality, delusions and/ or hallucinations + seriously. Feeling that something bad is about to happen. May be associated with a particular situation or object, or it may be free-floating -- not associated with anything specific.
