PP247 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Extortion, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Price Controls
Document Summary
One of the two most notorious and often refuted articles in the business ethics literature (the other being friedman"s article on social responsibility from unit 5) Friedman and carr are the bad boys of business ethics. Carr argues that business is like poker- it requires bluffing and has its own game ethic, different from the ethics of religion and private life. Demands both a special strategy and an understanding of its special ethics. Ignore realm of friendship, cunning deception and concealment of one"s strengths and intentions, not kindness and open-heartedness, distrust of others, etc. I think that this is effective in terms of business negotiations- you want to conceal your desires so as not to be taken advantage of. In poker, you either win or lose; business is not like this. The aim of poker is to win as much money as possible, but business negotiations are not always one-sided.
