Nation- a collection of people bound by common sense of identity ex: values, traditions, history, language. Nationalism- desire for a nation to have a state, independent sovereignty and autonomy and power to own make decisions relating to economic and political governance. An ideology but very broad ex: can be informed by more developed ideologies. Waves of independence: late 50s north africa, sudan, ghana, 60s more than 30 countries in the continent of africa became independent nation states. Peaceful independence: 70s to 80s- characterized by violent transitions to independence. Cluster of former french colonies that gave independence. Po319 lecture notes: late 80s and 90s southern african countries, zimbabwe, characterized by significant white settler populations. 80s 90s- end of soviet rule, end of the cold war. Factors that led to the rise of nationalism. Administration centers over time became well established. Increase over colonialism, educational opportunities, and opportunities to do post secondary education abroad.
