The sovereign state is the highest form of authority in a territory and is, in theory above any challenge. Replaces feudal structures in which authority is divided between the aristocracy? including kings, princes and lords, the guilds and the roman catholic church. State is a political association that exercises sovereign jurisdiction within a defined territory. Or, as weber would say, requires : a territory population monopoly of the means of legitimate violence. State institutions effectively control pop within its borders (law and order;bodin,hobbes. weber) The sovereignty right of the states to enter and leave international arrangements with each other. The idea that international law is orientated to the establishment of minila rules of coexistence and that the process of lawmaking and law enforcement is in the hands of individual states. Popular > people are source of all political power, have right to overrule other bodies. Not only describes what is but also what ought to be.
