In cmaj7, c e g are chord tones and all the tones and semitones inbetween are passing tones. In cmaj7, if a melody moves from g (ct) to a back to g, the a is the auxilary tone. Chromatic auxilary note: g to f sharp back to g. Has to be a step or a half step. Auxillary notes return to the same note it left. Go down by a small bit and return back up with larger leap. Go up by a small tone and back down by larger leap. Moves past the resolution and arrives by step. Putting the tension on the downbeat of the next chord. A note that would not usually be on the strong beat and resolves up or down. When the melody is going to the new chord before the chord is there. Usually an eighth or a quarter prior to the new chord.
