Common belief that one must master the fundamentals. You don"t necessarily have to master it to succeed. Whats more important: keeping conditions constant or to generalize the skill to di erent situations? (stale environment: a shortstop does not ground balls with the same speci cation throughout the game, expose the player to multiple di erent situations. Variability should be the focus of practice. Variability in movement and context is a necessary ingredient for skill development. Trying to solve tproblem form di erent start points. A learner should be able to generalize a skill to a variety of situations. Variable practice enhances the development of the learners schema (schmidt: helps to select appropriate parameters for task, once you know the schemas (elements of skill)you can practice in di erent context/variability. Skill acquisition is best achieved through modi cation through constraints (newell and macdonald) You can see performances , it is measurable.
