KP161 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Discovery Learning, Social Cognitive Theory, Observational Learning
Document Summary
Demonstrations: the preferred instructional method, showing a learner a new skill facilitates learning more effectively than explaining, referred to as modelling/observation learning. Mirror neurons: nerve cells in the cortex that fire when, we perform an action, we watch someone else perform the same action, neural mechanism through which observational learning occurs. Theories of observational learning: social cognitive theory, learner observes modelling, the learner processed info & transforms it into a cognitive memory, suggests: see -> process -> store, dynamic interpretation of learning, learner perceives key info directly. Darden, 1997: model-observer similarity, do you have a person just model it, chooses from the group, and have the others in the group identify where their skill may be in comparison, alternative mediums, use of video, still pictures. Table 7. 2 - characteristics of expert model versus learning demonstrations (darden, 1997) Level of skill pro ciency slightly above that of observer. Verbal cues accompany demonstration correct & incorrect aspects.
