Supply nutrients needed for the producion of energy: acquired from food intake. Food is more than a source of nutrients. Mealimes are a ime of family and social gathering. Too litle ime to plan, shop , prepare and sit down to proper meals. Availability of highly processed foods: example: buter margarine. Food sources supply our bodies with ~50 essenial nutrients that are required in order to carry out normal physiological funcion. Energy yielding (proteins, fats, carbohydrates), vitamins, minerals, water and dietary iber: vitamin d from the sun, vitamin k made in the intesinal tract. Composed of: 50% carbs, 20% fats, 30% protein. Carbs are the body"s most eicient form of energy. Starches provide a rich source of vitamin and minerals. Cannot be broken down and therefore provides bulk in the digesive tract.
