GG231 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Cloud Seeding, Wavelength, Tornado Warning
Document Summary
People most effected by tornados are elderly and those with limited mobility. People living at trailer parks are in series danger due to lack of stable infrastructure grounding their homes. It is very difficult to determine weather patterns; one could simply wait 20 minutes for the weather to change and the skies to open up to blue skies. Installation of a network of doppler radar stations across north america has significantly improved our ability to predict paths of tornados. The antennas on these radars send out electromagnetic waves. Clouds, raindrops, ice and more reflect these waves. The reflected wave length differs weather the object is moving towards it or not. A watch is a public advisory that one or more tornados might develop, a typical watch covers an area of 50,000 100,000 km squared. Warning is when a tornado has been sighted or detected by the doppler radars.
