GG231 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Hydrosphere, Lithosphere
Document Summary
Parts of western north america are prone to earthquakes and landslides and experience rare volcanic eruptions. Atlantic and gulf of mexico coasts are threatened by hurricanes. Texas to ontario are at risk of tornadoes and blizzards. Process: ways in which events affect earths surface. All processes are driven by three sources of energy: internal heat. Produces slow convection in the solid but plastic mantle: hazards include earthquakes and volcanoes 2. Energy from the sun warms the earths atmosphere and surface: hazards include violent storms, floods, and costal erosions, gravitational attraction of the earth - Hazard: the probability that a specific damaging event will happen within a particular period of time. Vulnerability: the susceptibility of people and property to a hazardous event. Coping capacity: the ability of a population to respond and reduce the negative effects of a hazardous event. Exposure: is the overlap in space and time of a hazardous process and infrastructure or population.
