ES295 Lecture 6: Es295 lesson 6
Document Summary
Cohen grouped tourists into 4 categories: organised mass tourists, individual mass tourists, explorers, drifters. The organised mass tourist is seen as the least adventurous with little motivation to leave the confines of his/her home environmental bubble. Where drifters are on the opposite end and look for the most authentic travel experiences available. One idea in why people travel is motivation to satisfy inner physiological and psychological needs. Motivation theory: emergence of a need, motive or drive creates a state of disequilibrium in an individual, which is reducible through participation in an activity that leads to a desired goal. Iso-ahola argued that people travel for two main reasons: to seek intrinsic awards, to escape their everyday environment. Kusler argued there are 3 types of ecotourists: do-it-yourself ecotourists (largest percentage of all tourists, stay in a variety of different types of accommodation and have the mobility to visit any number of settings.
