ES101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Natural Capital, Anthropocentrism
Document Summary
It is important as a manager that you consider how you would deal with these types of management situations. A good place to start is by considering the general differences in various worldviews. We often place value of wildlife depending on how attractive they appear to us. Instrumental (utilitarian) value: values life forms because of their usefulness to us or to the biosphere. The concept of preserving natural capital and biodiversity because they sustain life and support economies is an instrumental value based mostly on the usefulness of these natural goods and services to us. Intrinsic (inherent) value; values a form of life just because it exists, regardless if useful to us. Anthropocentric value: the view that a wild species, ecosystem, biodiversity, or the biosphere has value only because of its usefulness to us is called an anthropocentric (human centered) value.
