EN390 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Geoffrey Chaucer, Frame Story, Courtly Love
Document Summary
Spring time- pilgrims coming together to a tavern. Chaucer is considered a great poet of courtly love: a lot of whining (esp. in troiles and versailles?) Since it"s about spring, you"d expect it to be about love instead of a pilgrimage: nature inspired- expecting love. Pilgrimage- taking time away from your regular job to go on a trip of spiritual renewal: spring is a time of rebirth, fertility, and reunion. Not really a spiritual journey, but for travel and enjoyment. Kind of a random group of people, they don"t really know one another very well: they"re still being kept together in their need for travel. Boccaccio"s decameron is the main work in the background: series of tales linked by a framing device- a plague in the town of nobles- go out to country and sit around to tell tales, daute 1001. Actually walking on an adventure, rather than just sitting around which will give you more variety influenced by triggers.
