EN119 Lecture 11: Week 11 Notes
Document Summary
In the london chapters (part 1, chapters 14, 16 and 17) we see the action through the eyes of the narrator"s brother. Where the narrator believes primarily in the survival of the self and one"s own family, the brother helps strangers, putting himself in danger to protect the weak. This contrast allows the reader to see two different reactions to danger and to the struggle to survive. (in the end, both brothers survive the martian invasion, which somewhat refutes the idea of those who survive deserving to survive. ) The london chapters also stress the inadequacies of methods of human communication. Compared to the martians who communicate quickly and completely with one another, and who seem to understand one another telepathically, the inadequacy of the human method of communication is painfully apparent. Chapter 14 focuses on how the news about the martians is received in london.
