Document Summary

Hamilton reading- inaccuracy and simplicity- although it can be said that administrative work is political and critical work is qualitative, research can be both. it can be qualitative, quantitive and almost everything is political. Concentration of ownership- horizontal integration, vertical integration and conglomerates. Horizontal integration is when one company owns several media outlets which are the same (that is different media outlets that service similar industries. This can cause a problem in that speci c led as it brings into question the reliability of the source and limits options in terms of perspective). Convergence is when media companies specialize in different forms of media come together to take advantage of presumed synergies enabled by digitization/digital content. e. g. canwest- bought a ton of newspapers while owning a global television company to create synergies. These processes are called consolidation in businesses but in communications you use worlds like concentration and convergence as they are correct, not interchangeable and critical.
