During wwi the men ighting in the trenches got it: war fever. Always seemed to show up in battle: prison fever. High amounts in prisons: ship fever. Arrived on the shores of the americas with typhus: jail fever. Skin takes on a dark hue: irish fever. Many died from malnutrition and in turn typhus. Catholics were most afected: counties that were predominantly protestant they got relief. Trenches, prisons, ships: filth, poverty, immigrants, famine, stress. Historically, two things explained" outbreaks of typhus, and why speciic groups (or living conditions) were likely to sufer from (or cause) outbreaks: bad airs" miasmas or putrid smells. Idea of just smelling things can induce illness: spontaneous generation. Idea that the ilth that was on people with typhus that would generate the disease.
