BU352 Lecture 10: Chapter-9-Leadership
Document Summary
Leadership the ability to influence others to achieve goals in an organizational context. Of course the formal title does not always mean that there is leadership. They are certain ones like extroversion and intelligence that are common amongst a set of leaders. Limits to trait theory: we are unsure whether the traits make the leader or if being in the leadership role produces these traits. Most crucial problem in trait theory is that it does not take into consideration the situation in which leadership occurs. Traits alone are not sufficient enough to determine leaders. Describe the following leadership behaviours and their consequences: consideration, initiating structure, leader reward, and leader punishment: consideration the extent to which a leader is approachable and shows personal concern and respect for employees. Consequence: strongly related to follower satisfaction, motivation and leader effectiveness. Initiating structure the degree to which a leader concentrates on group goal attainment. Consequence: related to leader job performance and group performance.
