Subordinate/ dominance is not always so clear cut. What are cost/benefits of having this hierarchy (dominance behaviour) Cost: not every individual will gain enough food, some may starve. No gene for age (age reach by surviving) Biggest challenge comes from the one closest to you in ranking. Very similar in competitive ability will have the most competitive. Interaction over female and male, you need both of them! (populations have even mix of female and male) Producers learn to eat fast (brief amount of time with the food before a scrounger comes and steals it) Challenged and you need to assert dominance (opportunity cost) Need to remember who other individuals are in your group (if not, make a mistake of challenging someone you can"t beat = injury, energy loss, time loss) or (challenging lower individuals constantly) Needs to remember past history with individuals (cognitive function and is required)
