Ethnobotany: ethnology-study of culture, botany- study of plants. 10,000 y. a: humans have spent most of their history as a foraging society (or hunting gathering society); nearly 250000 years for homo sapiens!! Lifestyle: more or less nomadic following temporary resources availability; no stable human settlements; no agriculture. Foraging societies stereotypes: often in hunting-gathering societies men hunt and women gather- but not always, and the labor division is not as clear-cut as previously thought. Common stereotype: the food supply was extremely laborious to gather, and the food sources precarious. Another stereotype: that foragers had a poor diet and were always starving. 2/3 of diet based on plants (ca. 100 spp. ) 2,355 kca/day rich in proteins, minerals and vitamins. In a foraging society, the (cid:894)super(cid:895) (cid:373)arket is the nature : one common stereotype: regarding foraging societies is that these people were/are ignorant and with a limited knowledge of plants and their environment.
