Income is the most important social determinant in health. Level of income shapes overall living conditions, affects psychological functioning, and in uences health related behaviours such as quality of diet, extent of physical activity, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol use. In canada, income determines other social determinants of health such as food security, housing, and other basic prerequisites of health. The suicide rates in the lowest income neighbourhoods were found to be almost twice those seen in the wealthiest neighbourhoods. Life expectancy of families and males in wealthy neighbourhoods is substantially increased compared to those in poor neighbourhoods. In wealthy neighbourhoods men on average live to 80 and women live to 84. In poor neighbourhoods men on average live to 76 and women live to 82. Food is one of the basic human needs and it is an important determinant of health.
