Document Summary

Distinguish by number of cotyledons - 1 cotyledon (monocot) or 2 cotyledons (dicots) Cotyledons are the first leaves that come out of the seed. Monocots they don"t form vascular cambium and cork cambium (they don"t develop a secondary structure) no secondary meristem. Development of vascular cambium in the vascular cylinder of a dicot root. 4 strands of xylem alternate with 4 strands of phloem. Structure that looks like a cross (wavy shape) vascular cambium. Divides faster there, wavy structure eventually becomes circular. Stem and root vascular cambium producing towards exterior secondary phloem. Secondary structure (dictos) starts from primary structure (modification of primary structure). Secondary phloem is crushed, secondary xylem is pushed towards the centre . Roots of diff sizes branching, branches produced by pericycle. In this case, the storage tissues become super develop (huge), even secondary tissues contribute to addition parenchyma which food is stored. Potatoes are not roots, they are underground modified stems.
