Document Summary

Types of organisms that do anaerobic respiration are prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea) Main diff between anaerobic respiration and oxidative phosphorylation is their terminal electron acceptor. Fermentation and anaerobic respiration both occur in the absence of oxygen but are completely different processes. If o2 is present, [citric acid cycle, electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation] If o2 is not present, nothing for nadh to feed its electrons into which means no nad+ Nadh is the product of glycolysis that helps fermentation occur. Oxidation reaction of nadh to nad+ (added to pyruvate to generate lactic acid) Fermentation does not happen to produce lactic acid. The good and productive thing that comes out of fermentation is to produce the nad+ that cannot be produced without the presence of oxygen. (the lactic acid produced is just there because it has to be made) Strict anaerobes: cannot grow in the presence of oxygen.
