Document Summary

Bi110 lecture 2: endothermic / endergonic reactions. Non-spontaneous reactions that absorb energy / require an input of energy. Products have more potential energy than reactants. G is positive: exothermic / exergonic reactions. Products have less potential energy than the reactants. Equilibrium point is reached when the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the backward reaction. As a system moves toward equilibrium, the free energy change of the system becomes lower until g = 0. Equilibrium in living systems are open, therefore they can maintain a highly organized system. Entropy of the system and surroundings increase in living systems. G of life is always negative as organisms continually take in energy-rich molecules (or light, if photosynthetic) and continually use them to do work metabolic pathway. Energy rich molecules (carbohydrates, fats, proteins) energy poor molecules (water, carbon dioxide, ammonia) anabolic pathway: consumes energy to build complicated molecules from simpler ones, e. g. , energy + amino acids (build) proteins.
