Women's Studies 1020E Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Maimonides, Hela, Lawrence Summers
Document Summary
Lecture 9 the female body in religion and science. Trying to find out what is happening in the world through observation. We often think about science as the only truth. Aristotle was one of the first scientists to write about women"s nature. He was a philosopher who looked at the natural women. He argued that since women had less teeth, their bodies had to be deficient. They were seen as a deformed, mutilated men. In these texts, it is hard to separate the philosophy from the science. Galen created the galenic model, which was followed for over 1000 years. Thought men were produced when it was warm (related to power and force, and men gave life), and women were produced when it was cold (women provided the matter, but men provided the soul of a baby) He dissected apes and extrapolated the information to people.
