Statistical Sciences 2141A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Quartile, Weighted Arithmetic Mean, Categorical Variable
Document Summary
We will be condensing the data into a few single numbers to represent the distribution of the data called statistics. There are two types used for quantitative variables: One that describes the centre of the distribution. One that describes the spread of the distribution. We that describes the location and relative location of a specific values of a variable in relation to the rest of the values (percentiles and quartiles). We can also use statistics to describe qualitative data. The number of observations in a single sample, that is, the sample size will often be denoted by n (if two samples simultaneously under consideration, we can use m and n or n1 and n2) For the observations of some variable x, the individual experimental trials will be denoted by x1, x2, x3,, xn (note: the subscript bears no relation to the magnitude of a particular observation)
