Sociology 2259 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: George Herbert Mead, Jane Elliot, A Class Divided
Document Summary
A two-day documentary was ilmed in the 1960s where a teacher was teaching an exercise in discriminaion. At irst the kids had names for people of diferent races and believed that white people were beter than colored people. The teacher, jane elliot, compared judging people based on the colour of their skin to judging people based on their eye colour. The brown-eyed kids were given collars to put around their necks: they felt ostracized and shamed, they started to make connecions to the way that black people are treated. The kids who were superior because of their eye colour went through a card pack faster than they did the day that they were lesser than. She explained that there was nothing fair about discriminaion, and the kids agreed that there wasn"t anything right about judging people by their eye colour or skin colour. In labelling theory, we consider discriminaion to be a human creaion.
