Was day celebrated end of harvest season and was considered a magical time between years when ghosts of earth walked. This came into north america with potato famine and pranksters played pranks and wore masks which then morphed into vandalism, which turned dangerous in the 30s. Trick or treating wqs originally extortion, which was give us candy or well trash your house, and the treats were given to stop this. Gendered version of halloween- what are we telling girls they"re supposed to be in girls vs boys. Using costume to push boundaries, especially as we get older.
