An explosion and huge fire engulf westray mine in plymouth, ns at 5:18am. All 26 miners working underground were killed instantly. Black felt up to 1km away from site. Worst mine disaster since 1958 cave in: 75 miners killed in springhill, ns. After 5 days of rescue, 15 bodies recovered; remaining 11 abandoned due to cave ins. Investigations were undertaken: origins of the westray mine, history of coal mining in pictou county, ns, political connections of mine developer curragh resources, machinations of nova scotia government and federal government. Conservatives v liberal party: at stake, control over provincial government. Dozens of reporters inverted on the site. Public formed a foundation (m) to help families of the dead miners. Unemployment high in pictou county, as high as 25% Coal miner could make ,000/annum without overtime. Local tory political, donald cameron, quickly promoted pictou coal mine project in his own county.
