Face: the idealized self that one presents to the audience, that lives up to social and normative values. One of the objectives of social interaction is to save face . There are various metaphors of the face in everyday language: When an individuals image of oneself is supported by the judgement of other participants (people projecting an image of themselves that other people buy) 2. be in the wrong face : when info that discredits the performer"s line (role) becomes evident. Ex: having something happen to you that causes you to act out of line. 3. out of face: when the indiviudal is caught off guard and is unable to play the expected role that situation demands. Controlling the presentation of self by keeping seperate different audiences that might call the performance into question. How we manage different social circles by compartmentalizing them. Ex: creating different groups on facebook where these groups can only see certain aspects of your account.
