Lecture 2: sociological thinking and the philosophy of social science part i. To ask and answer the question to engage in social theory: causal explanations (factors affecting this outcome, tensions between individual intentionality/ agency vs. external pressures/ structures/ institutions. 3 (youth, middle, old), or different: measurement/summarization: what apparatuses and techniques were used to summarize the data, ex: statistical techniques, coding, interviews etc. In principle, this can be a perfectly logical process. Ethos (authority), pathos (motion), logos (logic): do the reasons logically fit with one another, or do they contradict, are there other plausible interpretations of the evidence, the "so (cid:449)hat" (cid:395)uestio(cid:374) . Identifying the thesis statement: a good thesis statement should clearly and directly establish the position you wish to defend. It should also (usually) include he following 4 attributes: provocative: takes on a subject upon which reasonable people could disagree, demonstrable: deals with a subject that can be adequately treated given the nature of the assignment.
