Sociology 2235 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Danah Boyd, Suicide Of Amanda Todd, Flextime
Document Summary
Danah boyd: it"s complicated (cbc spark radio program) The pivotal issue in teens lives is their relaionship with peers: teenagers are learning to branch out and become independent. Dana boyd studied social media use in teens. Teens don"t have the freedom and lexibility that adults have. It is rare that the norms are all the same: we especially see this in marginalized community (eg. lgbt youth) It is important for kids to have unstructured ime because learning doesn"t just happen in formal structures: just by hanging out you understand hierarchies, social conlict, how to make sense of people. The intervenions needed for drama are diferent than the intervenions needed for bullying (it"s not just an aggressor and a vicim) It"s not just young people who experience these issues online, but adults as well: we talk about bullying as being a young-person phenomenon, but it happens with adults as well.
