Survey research: very old & a very popular, research technique. 1880 1st survey by karl marx in france: 25,000 questionnaires sent to workers. Descriptive(poverty caused by social problems) , explanatory (why people are falling into the poverty level) & exploratory research purposes best method to collect info about a population. General features of survey research: respondents are chosen through probability sampling procedures (gather random sample & there"s a certain amount of probability that it can be related to a larger population) Artificiality: results are not a true picture of population. Response rates: 50% adequate, 70% very good. Additional factors: sponsorship: more likely to do survey from king"s than for market research, inducement to respond: you get $ out of it etc. Not suited for people who are illiterate or for whom english not first language. Use interview schedule written list of standardized ?"s.
