Document Summary

1925, earnest burgess came up with the concentric zone hypothesis. At the core of the city, you have the loop which is the central business. District in a loop: government offices, big businesses, etc. Called it the loop because in chicago, the train goes around the downtown area. Around the loop you have the zone of transition : partly made up of factories, warehouses, etc. It is where things are stored/manufactured that will be sold or used in the loop. Eventually the loop expands a bit into this zone. Lots of people work in the loop and in the zone of transition most are the lower socio economic people. They live in the zone of transition, filling the needs of the retail establishments in the loop. There is also some rich people here they think it will be an up and coming neighborhood, or they have just stayed there for too long.
