Particular kinds of approaches or orientations to those areas of social life. Utilizing tools and concepts to study these areas of social life. Asking not only descriptive, but also diagnostic and prescriptive questions about these phenomena. Looks at the social structure and how it generates these things for the purposes of its maintenance. All manifest themselves by the employment or use of symbols. (cultural factors like fashion, slang) looks at how these are changed over time. Stems off of con ict theory (race theory, gender theory)
