Occurs as people and institutions across the planet become increasingly aware of, and dependent on, one another. Rapid movement of capital, commodities, culture, and people across national boundaries. Technological progress has made it possible to move goods and information over long distances quickly and inexpensively. Politics: important in determining the level of globalization. Politically isolated countries have less integration with the rest of the world. Economics: industrial capitalism is always seeking new markets, higher profits, and lower labour costs (capitalist competition has been the major spur to international integration) Globalization is a recent phenomenon (since the 1980s) Globalization is the result of industrialization and modernization, which picked up pace in the late 19th century. Globalization is a roughly 500 year old phenomenon that occurred as a result of control of developing societies by more developed, powerful societies.
