Composition of the paid labour force has changed over time. Workplaces remain inflexible to the face of family demands. Result: stalled revolution >>> rise of work family conflict. Occurs when peoples paid labour responsibilities interfere with the unpaid family responsibilities. 2 distinct events: time/role conflict: multiple roles at one time, stress and anxiety: multiple roles leads to stress and anxiety, developing a career and family tend to happen at the same time. Role overload -other stresses, you cant focus on more than one role, can"t do the role adequately. Role overload/conflict >>> role strain: experience discomfort and worry. Who"s doing what in and out of the house. Cutting the grass etc: childrearing responsibilities, eldercare. Children and parents to take care of. Increasing number of people working more than 40 hours per week. Increased number of people working less than 40 hours per week. People working more than 40 hours - struggle with competing demands.
