Examine gender and social safety nets as social determinants of health. Discussion the intersection with other determinants of health as well as health. Critique current policies and programs aimed at reducing disparities within these determinants. Cihr push to include gender analysis: how we define gender and the health differences in men and women. Acknowledges biology exists inside the realm of social context: biological component, social construct. Recognizes all populations are gendered- people experience their worlds and are treated in their worlds based on gender: ex. Girls have parties with ponies because we make assumptions that girls should have tea parties and read while boys should be playing with trucks because they are more aggressive. Not identify as male or female: gender fluid. Male for day and female by night: cisgender, transgender/transsexual. Intersex study cbc: 1-4% children are born as intersex, 1990s parents taught to see children as problematic, allowable difference is shrinking, assignment.
