Brain imaging: structural - quantify things, functional - qualify, pet: injection of radioactive, positron emitting agent into blood stream. Neuro-vascular coupling - where there is more activity theres more blood. Where theres more blood ow there more radiation (gamma rays) ** what areas are more activated in the experimental vs control condition. Need control condition that leaves only the condition of interest. Differed in something in occipital cortex: language - speaking words = broca"s area. Limitations: requires the use of isotopes, low spatial resolution & low temporal resolution (changes in cerebral blood ow come much slower than changes in neurons. Advantages: no problems w movement & participants can speak (useful for language) Video: issues blood ow, oxygen & glucose consumption: fmri: huge constraints effect ecological validity (how well does the data resemble what is actually going on in real life - generalizability) Eg is reading single words in the machine the same as reading in class.
