Document Summary
So someone might have insomnia, but that might be influence due to the fact they. When the dsm was first introduced it was very psychoanalytic. However dsm 1 & 2 was very psychoanalytic. Freudian psychoanalytic is now criticized for being very sexist which you can see in older dsm"s with sexist language. The dsm describes disorders in a fashion that in some cases the diagnosis patient would more likely be a woman, even when the woman being diagnosed may not have a pathology. Some of this could be accounted for that the categories are made by professional agreement, which is influence by cultural norms. What as we as a culture think is acceptable or not acceptable. A lot of those norms are influenced by values that put emphasis on stereotypical male behaviours (assertiveness, competitiveness) vs. stereotypical female behaviours (cooperativeness, neutering). The dsm also doesn"t"t take life circumstances into account.
