Document Summary

Digestion: digestion involves breaking down food and absorbing its nutrients into the body. Mechanical digestion starts by chewing which breaks up the food and adds saliva to it. Peristalsis through the esophagus moves food down to the stomach. The stomach contains hydrochloric acid and breaks the food down, and pepsin starts to chemically digest protein into amino acids. The stomach moves the remainder of particles through the pyloric sphincter to the first part of the small intestine which is the duodenum where most of the absorption of nutrients takes place. The duodenum breaks down particles even further including complex carbs into simple sugars so we can use them for energy. Fats are broken down by bile which is stored in the gallbladder, this takes place in the duodenum. The left-over water and vitamins and minerals are absorbed in the large intestine and the waste is carried to the anus and ends up in the toilet.
