Scan: finish chapter 6 + p. 226 233. About 15% of adults complain about sleep disorders. Sid (sudden infant death syndrome) some believe the baby has sleep apnea, therefore the baby stops breathing for a while and results in brain damage. Depleted supply of hypocretins (involved in arousal/wakefulness) Parasomnia: various sleep related problems, sleepwalking. Many waking actions performed out of awareness. Occurs in stage 4 (not acting out a dream, because they are not dreaming) If you wake them up, they will be confused and disoriented. Tends to run in families: sleep talking. Occurs in lighter stages (1 or 2) Sensitive to the external world; if someone is sleep talking, you can say something to them, and they can say something back to you: night terrors. When asleep, child suddenly sits up, screams. Dilated pupils, heart rate and breathing high. Does not occur in rem, should not wake the child.
