Psychology 1000-cognitive development: sensory motor stage (o-2yrs, nothing exists apart from child"s own perceptions and motor reactions, no self-concept. No feeling as self as part of the world. One big mesh of stimuli: look at organization of sensory and motor reaction (piaget schemas, at birth variety of reflex, at first schemas operate in isolation. Around 4 months start combining schemas: coordination of activities not present until 5 months (both hands co-ordination by 7 months, pseudoimitation present. Child can imitate but only if actions just produced. Not real imitation: importance of sensory (visual) feedback. Example: stick out tongue: rough acquisition by 11-12 months. Representational thought: external world exists, represented by some symbol. Object permanence: this requires representational thought, preoperational stage, conceptual system of higher order schemas, rules not fully acquired until age 7, inability to think in abstract rules (numbers, length substance etc)
