If you think it will happen it will cause stress: goal blockers, endangerment. Stress process: stressors (catastrophes, life changes, life event stress test, holmes and rache, hassles) Intervening factors (appraisal, perceived control, personality (type a highly stressed), social support, coping: stress reactions (physiological, emotional, behavioural) Sense stressor: sympathetic ns, adrenal medulla and epinephrine goes into the blood, also: sympathetic n. s, adrenal medulla, epinephrine, signals to hypothalamus and anterior pituitary, adrenal cortex, clucocoriticoids (cortisol) Cortisol: effects similar to epinephrine, coverts protein to glucose, makes fats available for energy, almost every cell in body has receptors for glucocorticoids, epinephrine targets a selective, cortisol effects everything. Note: reaction depends on appraisal: do you perceive that situation is a threat that you cannot cope, distress. Control: weiss (1977) with rats, group 1: no shock, group 2: avoidable shock (have control, group 3: unavoidable shock, note: group 2-3 are yoked receiving exactly the same number of shocks.
