Document Summary

Motivation: a process that influences the direction, persistence, and strength of self-directed behaviour. Drive theory (and homeostasis): homeostasis: the body strives to maintain an internal physical equilibrium. Requires a sensory mechanism to detect environmental changes, a response system, and a control centre to activate the response system: disruptions to homeostasis produces drives that motivate the organism to restore the balance. Proposed that reducing drives is the ultimate goal of motivated behaviour. Problem with the theory: people often do things that increase arousal like diet or watching horror films. Instinct: inherited predisposition to behave in a specific and predictable way to a particular stimulus: human instinct theories are questionable and often rely on circular reasoning, how motivation and behaviours are hereditary. Extrinsic: doing something for the reward or to avoid punishment. Intrinsic: doing something for its own sake: goal directed behaviour is determined by: strength of expectation that behaviour. Operant conditioning: maximize positive consequences and minimize negative consequences.
